Hi Friends,
I have a few things to share in this little newsletter:
1. Central Saanich Streets and Traffic Bylaw update:
If you happen to be reading this before noon on the 25th, you may want to send thoughts to CS council regarding this update. I'm forwarding the note from Jamie, the Capital Bike chair of the Peninsula Local Advocacy Committee here (highlighted in yellow):
Hi all,
Sorry for the late notice but I missed this in Central Saanich's agenda for tonight's Regular Council meeting (May 25th at 7:00PM). They're doing 3 readings of an update to their Streets and Traffic Bylaw.
I've attached my notes on it, please have a look over them and if you have the time, a quick skim over the bylaw for anything I might have missed.
Email your thoughts to Mayor and Council via municipalhall@csaanich.ca before noon to have it accepted as a late item during the meeting. Better yet, consider speaking in person during public participation at the meeting.
On a side-note, I'm planning to schedule another in-person meeting for us soon, I'm thinking sometime in mid-June. It's looking likely to be a Monday night, and I'm thinking in Sidney this time. I'll send another email about that soon but please let me know if Mondays don't work for you.
Thanks,
Jamie Wellbourn (He/Him)

2. Saanich's Wallace Drive Project:
Saanich is currently gathering feedback on how folks use Wallace Drive (the section south of the border between Saanich and Central Saanich), with the intent to add some traffic calming to make it safer and more comfortable for people who may walk or ride a bike along there. This is already marked as a "Cycling Route", however, the narrow road combined with no shoulders and lack of visibility around some corners can make it a stressful ride. It is an important connection between Central Saanich/Brentwood Bay and the Interurban Rail Trail in Saanich which can be used to connect to other cycling routes to reach various destinations. There are not many other great alternatives to travel between Central Saanich and rural Saanich. The painted bike lanes on West Saanich may be okay for some riders but I've heard from people that they do not feel safe with the speeds that vehicles travel on that road and that it does not feel comfortable to ride with children (either on their parents bike or on their own bike). It's also quite hilly, whereas Wallace is flat. Since moving to Central Saanich, I've heard from so many people how challenging it is to get around by bike due to lack of safe connector routes/gaps in the cycling network. While Lochside is a great connector, it is not close enough for folks who need to travel to points on the West side of the Peninsula.
It would be great if Saanich gets a lot of positive feedback for traffic calming on this route. Imagine if it felt safe enough for children to ride on it!

This survey is open until June 12th
3. Planning a CSaanByBike Meetup:
I've spoken with a few of you about trying to get together and I'm finally sending a poll to see when we can make that happen! Vote for as many days/times as you're available and I'll set one or two dates with the most votes.
Here's the poll to set the date
4. Staying in touch:
As I'm no longer on Facebook, I started a Signal group chat to keep in touch. Feel free to join and post messages there to keep the conversation going beyond this somewhat one directional channel. Here's the link to join
That's all for now!
